The Great Mosque

The expansive interior of this structure gives the visitor an incredible perception of space where countless arches are supported by slender pillars. About 200 years after the christianization of the region, a cathedral was built inside the mosque. This makes for a fascinating fusion of Christian iconography within the walls of a Syrian-influenced masterpiece.

OM: A sacred Sanskrit symbol believed to be the spoken essence of the universe. It is uttered as a mantra and in affirmations and blessings. The phonetics of the sound Om starts in the bottom of the vocal cavity and ultimately vaporates into a silent void. This process symbolizes the creation, the maintainence, the destruction of all things and the return to where they came.
